I needed to wash off in the river. I could not rest until I washed the dirt and dried blood from my body. The fact that someone’s blood was on me made me ill. Ries accepted my request and ordered one of his soldiers to accompany me to the river. He said it was necessary, for my protection.
I agreed and, shortly after we had everything settled for the night, I headed to the river with a soldier that looked to be in his late twenties. His short, light brown hair was unstyled. Now in a seaweed green tunic, I noticed the jellyfish tattoo on his right arm. Medousa. The symbol of the military.
We made it to the river in just a few minutes. This particular spot was as much forest as the spot where camp was set up. The river weaved its way through the trees, the large trunks and roots grew right on the bank. Dark night had set in while we set up camp. The foliage over the river blocked out the moonlight, except for small patches where there were no leaves.
The soldier started to say something in Atlantean and then stopped. He switched to English and said, “I’ll stand guard here on the bank.”
I didn’t care to make sure they knew I understood Atlantean. That secret might be the very one that would mean life or death because, if they thought I didn’t understand Atlantean, they might talk about things I should know about. For example, I didn’t yet know if I could trust Ries and the rest of the soldiers.
How could I make the decision to trust them? With the exception of Ries, none of the other soldiers introduced themselves to me. I couldn’t be too careful. Anyone on the island could be a Knight of the Abyss. And besides that, some people, like Oaren’s neighbor, were going to side with the Knights in order to protect themselves.
The water rushed by as I stood on the bank between two large trees. Flowing faster than in the other sections, I figured it would be easier to wash off. I carefully climbed down the bank and lowered myself into the water. One last look at the environment around me reinforced that darkness was concealing it. The soldier’s outline stood guard on the bank.
My body floated into relaxation. The force of the water wash-ed the dirt off of me. The cool water was a comfort to the aches from the day. I submerged in the water so that I could wash my face and hair.
A scream. A flash of bright light. Another scream. A flash of a vision I couldn’t make out. Another scream. It was Aerian’s scream. The flashing pictures flew through my mind in a blur. Images of Aerian in chains, being assaulted by the Knights, were interrupted by blackness.
This was much different than the previous visions of Aerian. Something was wrong with the connection. The Knights were hurting her; they were keeping her mind from making the connection.
